#GIA Summer 2016 Gems & Gemology: Canadian Diamond Mining, Largest Diavik Diamond and more....

Summer 2016 Gems & Gemology:
Breaking the Ice on Canadian Diamond Mining
Issue covers Fabergé figures, responsible mining and much more

In the Summer 2016 issue of Gems & Gemology (G&G), researchers journey to the remote and subarctic Diavik mine to capture the fascinating story of Canadian diamonds, examine two exquisite Fabergé figures, and review ongoing efforts in responsible mining. GIA’s quarterly professional journal also highlights a colorful and productive era in Colombian emerald mining and examines the process of cutting a 3,019 ct white opal into a museum-quality piece. This issue is now available in print and online.

G&G’s cover story, “Mining Diamonds in the Canadian Arctic: The Diavik Mine,” explores the mine’s discovery, development and operations, and looks to its planned closure in 2024, when the site will be restored to nearly its original condition. GIA’s Dr. James Shigley, Russell Shor, Pedro Padua and Dr. Mike Breeding, along with the Carnegie Institution of Washington’s Dr. Steven Shirey and Diavik’s Douglas Ashbury, look beyond the mine’s value as a premier diamond source to its value as a window into the depths of the Canadian Shield. By gathering information from the kimberlites at Diavik, geologists can reconstruct the early history of the North American continent. The article is supplemented with exclusive videos captured at the Diavik mine.

weighing 187.66 ct, is the largest Canadian diamond to date.

Next, jewelry historians Timothy Adams and Christel Ludewig McCanless discuss the design, construction and history of two Fabergé hardstone figures that depict the Romanov empresses’ Cossack bodyguards. The issue’s third article, by GIA’s Jennifer-Lynn Archuleta, provides insight into the colored gem industry’s ongoing efforts to establish ethical, sustainable mine-to-market supply chains.

In the issue’s Notes and New Technologies section, lapidary Ted Grussing reveals the special considerations he applied to cutting a 3,019 ct gem-quality white opal from Australia into a 1,040 ct finished gem with play-of-color across its entire surface. In a field report, GIA’s Robert Weldon and his coauthors journey to the world-renowned Chivor mine and revisit Peter Rainier’s achievements as manager during an illustrious era of Colombian emerald mining.

The regular Lab Notes, Micro-World and Gem News International sections round out the issue. G&G’s free archive containing every issue from 1934 to present, more in-depth coverage, hundreds of additional photos, and exclusive video footage are available on GIA’s website at http://www.gia.edu/gems-gemology

Reed Jewelry Group Announces Exciting Future Plans for JCK and LUXURY Events

         Reed Jewelry Group Announces Exciting
Future Plans for JCK and LUXURY Events

Following successful 2016 event editions, JCK and LUXURY have unveiled their future plans for 2019 in Las Vegas. After eight great years at Mandalay Bay, JCK and LUXURY will return to the The Venetian, The Palazzo and Sands Expo in Las Vegas 2019.

"We have worked closely with the team at the Sands and were fortunate to get the LUXURY and JCK date patterns on the calendar," commented Yancy Weinrich, Senior Vice President of Reed Jewelry Group. LUXURY will take place May 30 – June 5, 2019 and JCK from June 2 – June 5, 2019.

Since JCK and LUXURY's previous editions, back in 2010, the Sands Expo and Convention Center has undergone a complete overhaul of major renovations and upgrades, including: a newly designed breathtaking entryway, easier to navigate layout that has made crowd traffic flow simple and less spread out, a new extensive Business Center, Café and additional amenities. The Sands Convention Center is conveniently connected to the Venetian and Palazzo Resorts with over 7,000 suites and world renowned dining, entertainment, shopping and nightlife. The convenient mid-strip centralized location of the Sands is ideal; it will give customers the ability to choose to stay on property or at any of the other hotels within walking or a short driving distance.

In 2017 and 2018 JCK and LUXURY will remain at Mandalay Bay and continue to thrive. "Mandalay Bay has been proud to partner with Reed Exhibitions over the last 6 years to host and help grow the prestigious JCK and LUXURY Tradeshows. We look forward to welcoming back the jewelry industry for the next two years and then supporting it in Las Vegas for many years to come," said Chuck Bowling, President & COO at Mandalay Bay.

"As we plan for the next three years we will continue to curate our neighborhoods and efforts of making the shopping experience for buyers easy. JCK and LUXURY will continue to invest in the customer experience from arrival to departure–creating unique business opportunities and memorable networking experiences," added Weinrich.

NEW CEO Appointed
Gem-A recently announced the appointment of Alan Hart FGA DGA as the new CEO of the Gemmological Association of Great Britain (Gem-A).

A former member of the Gem-A Council, Hart is currently Head of Earth Sciences Collections at the Natural History Museum, London. With a wealth of experience in the gem and mineral trade, Hart started his career at the Natural History Museum in 1981 as Assistant Minerals Scientific Officer, progressing to his current position of Principal Curator of Gems and Minerals and Head of Earth Sciences Collections in 2012. Hart is Chair of the Museum’s Collections Committee and serves on various science executive boards, providing strategic and operational goals to improve standards, best practices and operational efficiencies.
Hart will join the Association on 1 June 2016.
Of his appointment, Hart said: “I am truly excited at the prospect of being the CEO at Gem-A. Having been associated with Gem-A for many years and having worked alongside many of the staff and the Trustees, I am fortunate in knowing that they are as passionate about their work as I am. I want to ensure we continue to thrive by using all of our collective expertise to continue as the centre of excellence that is leading the way in delivering the highest quality gemmological education and training.” Hart continued: “It is an exciting time for me and an exciting time for Gem-A — I look forward to the challenges and the successes we will share together.”

In a statement from the Gem-A Council, newly-appointed Chair Miranda Wells FGA DGA said: “Alan is an accomplished leader, with an innate ability to bring people of diverse backgrounds together through his collaborative and communicative approach. His professional background also provides broad experience in both mineralogical and gemmological circles, as well as a clear and deep understanding of the structure and position of Gem-A as an organization and premier educational institution. The Council were unanimous in choosing Alan, and we are looking forward to working with him and realizing his exciting vision for the future of Gem-A.”

Relaunch of the Gem Empathy Award
Gem-A are pleased to announce the relaunch of the Gem Empathy Award, in partnership with International Jewellery London (IJL). The award, open to all those exhibiting in the Design Gallery at this year’s IJL, will be presented at the show — to be held at Olympia, London, from 4–6 September 2016.

Gem-A will provide a breathtaking 10.46 ct Fantasy Cut heliodor (also known as golden beryl), sourced from award-winning gem cutter John Dyer, around which applicants will be encouraged to create a design that they feel shows the stone to its best advantage.

Gem-A Marketing and Events Manager, Elaine Ruddie DGA, commented: “There have been some incredible winners of the Gem Empathy Award over the years but we want to open the competition up, to make it more accessible and inspire creativity. To do that we knew that we had to provide a very special stone and it’s with great thanks to John Dyer that we’ve been able to do exactly that.”

The judging panel will be made up of four representatives from Gem-A and IJL, and will evaluate submitted designs based on the relationship between stone and design, the practicality of the design and the style and beauty of the overall design. Sam Willoughby, Event Director at IJL and a member of the judging panel, said: “This competition will undoubtedly inspire some beautiful designs featuring this exceptional stone by our Design Gallery exhibitors. The new criteria opens up the Gem Empathy Award to so many more designers and will make for a stunning display for visitors to the show. We are extremely appreciative to Gem-A for this creative initiative.”

REMINDER: Jennifer Trask – Cabinet of Curiosities at Aaron Faber Gallery

From a Press Release

Aaron Faber Gallery Spotlight:
Jennifer Trask – Cabinet of Curiosities
Only Through the End of the Month!

I wanted to remind you about the great Summer 2016 exhibit at Aaron Faber Gallery - take a moment to enter jewelry artist Jennifer Trask’s Cabinet of Curiosities....you only have through the end of the month!

Like the wunderkammern for which her early 2000s collection references, Trask marshals together a divergent assortment of crushed gems, peacock feathers, butterfly wings, powdered pigments and curiously unidentifiable objects to create artist jewelry as fantastically atypical as the women they adorn.
18K and 22K gold and silver crystal-covered round cases are locked together and redefined as wearable cabinets to lock away Trask’s miscellany of nature’s marvels – which include dyed beetles, Salamis parhassus wings, crushed shells, sulfur, leaf skeleton, and the occasional eyeshadow.

“Like that cabinet of curiosities, these colorful, wearable and inviting jewels provoke a range of responses upon close examination, from delight to caution to discomfort, that tell-tale frisson of our not-always-easy relationship with nature and our role in it,” saysPatricia Faber, curator and co-owner of Aaron Faber Gallery. “This is the territory that Trask explores in her jewelry collections: yes, breathtakingly beautiful…but is it ours to see, to have, to own? Judging from the many avid private collectors and public collections that have acquired Trask’s work, the answer is yes.”

Jennifer Trask’s Wunderkammern Collection will be available at Aaron Faber Gallery through July and August. 2016.

Aaron Faber Gallery is committed to providing a voice to new artists in metal and showcasing the ever-changing work of established studio jewelry artists. We are inspired by educating new collectors as well as assisting established collectors to develop their expertise.
