Meet the 2017 AGTA Spectrum Awards™ Judges:

Arun Bohra, Arunashi

A native of Jaipur, India, Arun Bohra was destined to design and make jewelry. He is the eighth generation of a family that has been in the jewelry business since 1841, creating exquisite, elaborately detailed pieces for Indian royalty. Arun draws on the rich heritage of both his family and his culture in creating his own signature line Arunashi. Arun began his professional career as a gemstone dealer, where he enjoyed the challenge of finding rare, beautiful stones, which laid the foundation for his profound knowledge of the jewelry industry. In 2004, Arun and his Wife, Ashita, combined their names, talents and experience to create their own line of jewelry, Arunashi, a bold innovative line of luxury jewelry. The collection fuses the finest technical achievements with opulence and sophistication. Unexpected mediums, highly articulated metal work, and an infusion of color gloriously expressed in rare gems are the signature elements of Arunashi. Arun is very passionate about design, and approaches jewelry an art, and each Arunashi piece embodies gemstones of exceptional quality and the finest craftsmanship, weaving together art and fantasy, tradition and innovation, drama and subtlety, bringing a fresh voice to an antique craft. All the pieces are one-of-a-kind, and Arun’s work has limited distribution, thru a handful of retailers around the world, each account carefully selected, that share the same passion and philosophy as that of Arunashi.

Cathy Calhoun, Calhoun Jewelers

Cathy Calhoun found her way into the jewelry business in an unusual way. A friend of hers fell ill, and she temporarily took over his store while he recovered. And the rest is history! With a background in business and finance from Temple University, Calhoun continued her education at the Gemological Institute of America and the American Gem Society. Calhoun Jewelers, formerly Zenker Jewelers, is proud to be the Royersford, Pennsylvania, area’s best and largest name in fine jewelry since 1951. Calhoun brings an unmatched passion and knowledge to Calhoun Jewelers with years of experience with fine jewelry, as well as custom design, estate jewelry and repairs. In addition to serving as a long-time board member, and president of the American Gem Society (2010-2012), she is proud to be the Pennsylvania Jeweler of the Year (2009). She serves on the Board of Directors for the Jewelers Mutual Insurance Company, Jewelers for Children, Diamond Empowerment Fund and Jewelers of America. Calhoun is the recipient of many industry awards, including the 2014 WJA Award of Excellence (Retail Jeweler), and the inaugural Sallie Morton Award from the American Gem Society, which was given to the nominee whose vision and hard work are instrumental in helping the AGS grow its Guilds. Most recently, Calhoun was honored with the AGS’s most prestigious award, the Robert M. Shipley Award, at the 2017 AGS Conclave. The award was in honor of her untiring commitment to the jewelry industry and her dedication to and service to the American Gem Society. Calhoun has a passion for giving back, and has hosted special events at Calhoun Jewelers benefiting the Wounded Warrior Project. Calhoun has been featured as a jewelry expert on Antiques Road Show, Good Morning America, World News Tonight, Travel Channel, CNN Money and HGTV’s “If Walls Could Talk” and “You Live in What.”

Sherris Cotter-Shank, Gemscapes

Recognized as one of the world’s most talented gemstone artists, Sherris has a unique gift for looking into the heart of each gem to find its hidden beauty and reveal it to the world. Sherris’ gem sculptures have been sold at Christies in England and acquired by the The Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C. She has won nine AGTA Cutting Edge Awards™ as well as an award from The Competition For The Advancement In Gemstone Engraving in Idar Obertsetin, Germany. Her work is regularly featured in books and magazines, and she has spoken multiple times at AGTA, RJO, and AGS.

Alishan Halebian, Alishan

Halebian is one of the most original artists creating and pursuing his own vision in jewelry. Being a self-taught goldsmith, his treatment of precious metals is masterly. Using sophisticated techniques, he creates seemingly weightless pieces, capturing metal’s beauty in a luxe look with textures set to thrill and inspire. Alishan’s Armenian heritage brings the philosophies of two world cultures, East and West together, which burst into creative expression of style in his distinctive collections. His discerning clientele are attracted to his designs for their notably individual characteristics and emotions, confronting line and form. Contemporary designs, merged with classical art elements bring exquisite style to his jewelry collection, which sell at the finest retail jewelry stores. Alishan’s jewelry has been worn on red carpet awards by celebrities and his one of a kind pieces have been exhibited in several museums and art galleries.

Gemmy Partnership - Columbia Gem House & Sapphires of Montana #TheDailyJewel

from a Press Release

Columbia Gem House
and Sapphires of Montana Unite

Merger aims to increase production and availability of Montana Sapphires.

Representatives from Columbia Gem House and Sapphires of Montana announced today that the two companies have united resulting in “Sapphires of Montana by Columbia Gem House”.

Columbia Gem House is the industry leader in Fair Trade and responsibly sourced gemstones with mine to market traceability, and is the largest supplier of gemstones mined in America.

As a vertically integrated company, Columbia Gem House also provides heating, cutting and US jewelry manufacturing to customers world-wide.

Sapphires of Montana’s expertise lies in the branding, marketing and sale of Rock Creek Montana Sapphires. The merger has come about to increase the production and availability of Montana Sapphires under the successful brand, “Sapphires of Montana”.

Columbia Gem House, a family business, was founded by Eric Braunwart 40 years ago and is known as the largest supplier of brand name gemstones. For the past 15 years, the company has focused on producing Fair Trade gems with a transparent supply chain from mine to market. Of the merger Eric said, “It’s a natural fit to bring in additional strength in sapphires of a Montana origin in a market that is growing almost faster than we can keep up.”
 Owned and operated by women,
Sapphires of Montana was founded by Lisa Brooks-Pike and Margo Bedman in 2012. After a successful sell-out show on QVC the company expanded its focus to supporting a clientele of young up-and-coming millennial and established independent designers.

“Since Sapphires of Montana was modeled on the Fair Trade, mine to market principals of Columbia Gem House, uniting the brands is a positive next step,” says Lisa.

“Our business ethics and ideals are in alignment,” says Margo, adding, “Merging the Sapphires of Montana brand with Columbia Gem House allows us to provide a sustainable supply of Montana Sapphires to the industry.”

In conjunction with the merger, Lisa Brooks-Pike, co-owner and VP of Sales and Marketing for Sapphires of Montana will continue with Columbia Gem House as Marketing Director. #JewelryThatGivesBack Color Story's "LovePendants" Partners With The Foundation for Gender Equality Creates “Women’s Empowerment” Jewelry

Grammy Nominated Performer Jewel,

Golden Globe Nominated Actress Maria Bello
and Academy Award Winner Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy
First Recipients of LovePendants “Women’s Empowerment” Jewelry

LovePendants Named Official Jeweler for
The Foundation for Gender Equality

LovePendants, the recently launched engraved gemstone division of Color Story founded by award-winning fine jewelry designer and jewelry industry veteran, Robert Leser, has been chosen by The Foundation for Gender Equality to create “Women’s Empowerment” jewelry for the charitable nonprofit organization dedicated to raising money to fund gender equality and women’s empowerment social programs. Fifty percent of sales from all LovePendants “Women’s Empowerment” jewelry will be donated to The Foundation to aid in their fundraising goals.

The jewelry is available through both websites for LovePendants (www.lovependants.com) and The Foundation for Gender Equality (www.genderequalityfoundation.org).

The relationship between LovePendants and The Foundation for Gender Equality was publicly unveiled during The Foundation’s first annual fundraising day, “A Spectacular Day for Gender Equality,” held in the Delegates Dining Room of the United Nations on Tuesday, May 17, 2016.

During the lunch portion of the day, Ravi Karkara, Senior Advisor Strategic Partnership and Advocacy to the Assistant Secretary-General and Deputy Executive Director of United Nations Women presented a LovePendants “Women’s Empowerment” necklace to two-time Golden Globe-nominated actress Maria Bello, the luncheon keynote speaker.

Lakshmi Puri, Assistant Secretary-General of the United Nations and Deputy Executive Director of UN Women, the United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women, later presented four-time Grammy-nominated performer, Jewel, and two-time Academy Award-winner Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy each with a gold and diamonds LovePendants’ “Women’s Empowerment” necklace during the evening fundraising gala.

“It’s an honor and a privilege to work with The Foundation for Gender Equality to achieve their fundraising goals in supporting women’s empowerment initiatives,” said Robert Leser. “As a father to my own beautiful daughter, I’m happy such organizations like The Foundation exists to help put gender equality in the forefront and empower women like my daughter to achieve their goals without limitations.”

To make the “Women’s Empowerment” pendants, Leser engraves The Foundation’s signature logo of a woman with upraised arms into his new cut of semi-precious gemstones. The stone is then set into a charm, necklace or bracelet in a choice of silver, vermeil or yellow, rose or white 14k gold, with an option to accent with diamonds.

The “Women’s Empowerment” logo is just one of hundreds of logos, designs, letters and symbols that can be custom engraved into a LovePendants’ gemstone. See a complete collection of options -- including options for sororities, bridesmaid gifts, corporate gifts, and birthday and holiday gifts – on the LovePendants’ website at www.lovependants.com.

The Foundation for Gender Equality marks the second charitable nonprofit organization for whom LovePendants now produces jewelry. LovePendants also produces jewelry for the Cancer Research Institute, a leader in Immunotherapy, where 20 percent of proceeds benefit the organization.

ABOUT LOVE PENDANTS
Launched by Color Story’s award-winning fine jewelry designer and jewelry industry veteran, Robert Leser, LovePendants is a new jewelry brand that allows customers to uniquely personalize their jewelry by engraving topaz, amethyst, green quartz or citrine with a symbol, letter or word that holds special significance. Gemstones are then set in a necklace, bracelet or charm in the customer’s metal choice of vermeil, silver or 14k gold.

To create LovePendants’ signature engraved gemstones, Leser invented a 12mm round gemstone cut with reversible flat surfaces; both sides of the stone have tables surrounded by crown facets closely aligned to each other. Leser’s concept to engrave in reverse on one side and then view the engraving from the other side was realized using sophisticated laser technology.

...and....

National Association of Jewelry Appraisers (NAJA) was founded in 1981 on the premise that the specialized field of gem and jewelry appraising was an area that was long overdue for representation on a professional basis.  Also, there was a need for an appraisal organization specializing in only gems and jewelry, one which would not be subject to the confusion of diverse appraisal disciplines such as real estate, machinery & equipment, art, household contents, etc.  The NAJA was formed as a response to this need.

The Association’s primary purpose is to recognize, and make available, the services of highly qualified, informed, experienced, independent, and professional appraisers of gems and jewelry to those members of the public requiring such expertise.  In addition, NAJA seeks to promote the trademark and professional designations earned by our members and to make available continuing educational materials in order to ensure that they are among the best informed appraisers in our industry.

Finally, it is our goal to promote professionalism among our members as well as the industry as a whole.  All of the above should provide reasonable assurance to the public of the professional skill, integrity, and responsibility of our members.

The National Association of Jewelry Appraisers is the only appraisal association in the United States that devotes itself solely to the appraisal of gems and jewelry and silver flatware and holloware.  All of our energies focus on these, and only these, subjects which are updated with new information as it becomes available.

Kremlin Museums Presents "Jewels Inspired by Nature” featuring Goldsmith/Enamelist Ilgiz F.

From Press Release

"Jewels Inspired by Nature”
Exhibition at the Kremlin Museums Presents
Timepieces by BOVET and Ilgiz F.

Pascal Raffy, Elena Gagarina and Ilgiz F.
Last month an extraordinary joint exhibition between Russian goldsmith Ilgiz Fazulzyanov and BOVET 1822 was officially opened. The event was exceptional in that the last independent jeweler to have been granted the privilege of presenting a solo exhibition within the walls of the Moscow Kremlin Museum was none other than Peter Carl Fabergé.

Pascal Raffy, Inna Solovieva and Sergei Kuznetsov             Pascal Raffy, Dina Fazulzyanova and Ilgiz Fazulzyanov

The fact that Elena Gagarina, General Director of the Moscow Kremlin Museums and host of the exhibition, decided to welcome Ilgiz Fazulzyanov into the Ouspenskaya Bell Tower demonstrates that despite his young age, the artist has already left his mark on the history of fine jewelry with his characteristic style. Inspired by nature, his jewelry not only reproduces its slightest, most delicate details; it also conveys the emotions roused by the flight of a dragonfly or the scent of a flower.

This talent was immediately apparent when Ilgiz F. and Pascal Raffy, owner of BOVET 1822 and DIMIER 1738, met two years ago. Since its foundation, BOVET 1822 has represented the very essence of watchmaking art forms and has won acclaim over the last two centuries for taking the decorative arts, such as engraving or miniature grand feu enamel painting, to new heights. The excellence of the BOVET craftsmen has also ensured that the Maison is regularly featured in the collections of the most prestigious watchmaking and art museums around the world.

BOVET 1822 and Ilgiz F. have been working together since 2015 to create a collection of exclusive timepieces that harmoniously combine grand feu enameling, gem-setting and watchmaking technology. Their partnership has already given rise to around ten unique pieces, several of which are an integral part of this exhibition.

Through its involvement in this event, BOVET is proud to be supporting the most talented artist of his generation while presenting enthusiasts of superbly crafted fine watchmaking marvels with a collection that is worthy of the pocket watches produced by the Maison in the 19th century.

The emotion and wonder expressed by the prominent figures who attended the opening ceremony indicate that the exhibition promises to be a great success, captivating visitors and collectors until July 31st.

About BOVET:BOVET 1822 is a Swiss Manufacturer of luxury timepieces whose origins date back to 1822, the year in which Edouard Bovet founded their workshop in the picturesque Val-de-Travers region of Switzerland. BOVET is renowned for its pocket watches manufactured for the Chinese market in the 19th century. Today, under the guidance and ownership of Pascal Raffy, a visionary with a passion for Haute Horlogerie, BOVET is thriving, manufacturing unique timepieces distinguished by their pocket watch inspired form. From extraordinary complications such as tourbillons and minute repeaters, to rare artisanal crafts such as enamel painting and fleurisanne engraving, each BOVET timepiece is brought to life under the practiced hand of a BOVET master watchmaker. With a highly limited production annually, BOVET seeks to preserve and cultivate the art and craft of traditional watchmaking, while delighting connoisseurs and collectors.
For additional information please visit:www.bovet.com

Ilgiz F. was born in Kazan. After graduating from the Kazan School of Art, the self-taught jeweler continued to master the art of jewelry creation independently. In 1994, Ilgiz F. discovered the art of gemstone enameling and, in a matter of months, mastered the technique to such an extent that his new creations received the highest praise from French experts, with Madame Figaro publishing an article entitled “the champion of enamel”. From that moment on, grand feu enameling became his favorite technique.

In 1999, Ilgiz F. relocated his jewelry workshop to Moscow, marking a new phase in his work and earning him increasing international renown. Ilgiz F. started to meet with customers and collectors from around the world. In 2008, he became the first living jeweler to have his work sold at auction by Christie’s. Several years later, this prestigious British establishment was followed by another auction house, Bonham’s. In 2011, his Bullfinches pendant won first prize at the International Jewelry Design Excellence Awards in Hong Kong. The pendant depicts a branch with three birds symbolizing the Russian winter. In 2013, Ilgiz F. confirmed his title of “Champion of Champions” with the Butterflies jewelry set, which conveys the state of nature during a solar eclipse using faceted black pearls.

To date, Ilgiz F. is the only jeweler in the world to have received two of this competition’s top awards. In 2014, Ilgiz F. also won first prize in the competition held by the Russian State, securing the “precious metals and precious gemstones” award for his Crows pendant. The works of Ilgiz F. can be found in museums and private collections around the world. The Moscow Kremlin Museum, meanwhile, has bought six other pieces for its own collection in Russia.
