During the show, the Institute’s museum will display 12 of the wonderfully clever and thought-provoking jewels – featuring a variety of gems and metals – produced for the 2012 theme: Ice.

Identifying Glass Fillings and “Healed Fissures” in Corundum
Thursday, May 288 to 10 a.m.
High-lead-content glass fillings are the most common ruby treatment today, while "healed fissures" are one of the least understood ruby treatments on the market. During this seminar, comprised of lecture and a hands-on lab, students will learn the identifying characteristics of these treatments, why they are done and to which types of corundum they are applied.

Identifying Synthetic Diamond
Friday, May 298 to 10 a.m.
Advances in diamond synthesis have led to improvements in the quality and size of synthetic diamonds. They’re also appearing more frequently in gemological laboratories, often undisclosed. During this seminar, which includes a lecture and a hands-on lab, students will learn to distinguish natural from synthetic diamond, and how to know when advanced laboratory testing is required to conclusively identify a stone.

Alumni Bungalow at “JCK Rocks the Beach”
Sunday, May 31, 8:30 to 11 p.m.
The GIA Alumni Association is hosting a cabana – Bungalow 1 – at The Beach at Mandalay Bay during “JCK Rocks the Beach,” featuring singer-songwriter Gavin DeGraw. Event attendees are encouraged to stop by to network and mingle with GIA alumni and industry members from across the globe. GIA Notifies Trade of Potential Undisclosed Diamond Treatment

from a press release

GIA Notifies Trade of Potential Undisclosed Diamond Treatment

CARLSBAD – May 12, 2015 – Approximately 500 colorless to near-colorless diamonds submitted primarily to GIA’s grading laboratory in Ramat Gan, Israel, were potentially subjected to an undisclosed temporary treatment.

GIA believes that the treatment temporarily masks the body color of the diamond, resulting in a color grade that can be up to three grades higher than its actual grade.

The Institute has terminated client agreements with the companies that submitted the diamonds in question and has notified appropriate trade bodies.

The report numbers of the potentially treated stones are posted on the GIA's website  at:  (

Anyone who has purchased or has access to any of these diamonds is asked to submit them to any GIA lab for a no-cost, expedited review.

CSARITE® Contributed to Gem-A’s Educational Programs

CSARITE® Contributed to Gem-A’s

Educational Programs

The Gemmological Association of Great Britain (Gem-A) received a generous contribution of CSARITE® faceted and rough gemstones for study in their prestigious educational programs.
Milenyum Mining, Ltd. made the donation to expand student’s knowledge of the natural, single source gem, actively mined at only one global source deep in the Anatolia Mountains of Turkey. The donation consists of faceted gems, rough specimens and a selection of crystals to be used for RI testing.

“Europe and the UK are rapidly growing markets for CSARITE(R),” explained Murat Akgun, president of Milenyum Mining Limited. “A contribution of CSARITE® gems of this magnitude enables Gem-A to share knowledge of this gem with their students and for those students to gain hands-on knowledge of this beautiful gem.”

Always natural and never enhanced, the lovely CSARITE® exhibits the rare gemological phenomenon of ‘color change’, exhibiting different colors under varying sources of light. Only about 40 – 50% of rough CSARITE® material is suitable for faceting, and of that amount, 98% is lost in the cutting process.

MML is the world’s only source supply of CSARITE®, a natural, unenhanced color-change gemstone. Responsible for cutting and marketing of this phenomenal gemstone, MML’s mission is to introduce gem and jewelry connoisseurs around the globe to CSARITE®’s unique beauty and rarity. MML is a member of The International Colored Gemstone Association and Gemmological Association of Great Britain. Visit for a list
of authorized retailers and distributors.
