Revere Academy of Jewelry Arts Finds a New Home

Revere Academy of Jewelry Arts Finds a New Home
San Francisco’s Revere Academy of Jewelry Arts has found a new home in the city’s classic Humboldt Bank Building. After a six-month transition, the California approved jewelry school has reopened its doors at 785 Market Street, across the street from its former location.
Completed shortly after the 1906 earthquake, the Humboldt Bank Building’s copper topped beaux art dome is the architectural gem of Market Street. The new location is a perfect match for a jewelry school that stresses traditional quality, design and fine craftsmanship.

Alan Revere designed the new studio and classroom incorporating traditional benches and tools, plus state-of-the-art video and studio equipment. A new 70” flat-screen TV enables students to see up close from across the room, as their instructor demonstrates intricate procedures. Following the European workshop model wooden benches are fitted with a torch, task light, flex shaft and all the hand tools needed to fashion jewelry. The studio is complete with a rolling mill, laser welder, polishing lathe, flattening hammer, shank bender, fume hoods, forging stumps, anvils, vices, and much more.
The Academy’s summer session, which runs through October 13, 2013, includes a selection of classes from beginner to advanced, in a range of jewelry related subjects such as fabrication, stone setting, engraving, gemology, design, metalsmithing, repair, casting, and more. This fall, Revere will offer its two-month Jewelry Technician Intensive Diploma Program in the new location from October 15 through December 13, 2013. Classes are taught by professional jewelers and experts in the field. Students come from around the globe to learn at Revere.

The Revere Academy is a professional jewelry trade school where seasoned masters share their skills and passion with students at all levels. Schedules and information are available upon request.

Spectrum Winners to Teach Design Secrets at Revere

For the first time, San Francisco's Revere Academy will host a design class that teaches students five key essentials to creative success. The five-day class, Awaken Your Creativity, will be held during Revere's annual Masters Symposium, from April 23-27, 2012 - taught by Gregoré and Jennifer Morin, a husband-wife team, both of whom are multiple AGTA Spectrum award-winners. The class is open to students at all levels.

Intended for those who want to learn what it takes to create a line of jewelry and design award-winning pieces, this class gives students step-by-step techniques to achieve these goals. Both instructors are outstanding, award-winning jewelry designers who will teach students how to open creative doors, solve problems, and enhance their jewelry design skills. The class combines lectures, guided exercises, individual exploration, group discussion, and skill building. All of this is accessible and fundamental to the novice, key to those building on past experience and invaluable to those farther along the path.

The class is organized into the five essentials of creative success: Imagination, Seeing, Drawing, Designing, and Believing. Participants will learn the foundation principles of design, drawing, and coloring and how to render dimensional jewelry designs with gemstones using watercolors and colored pencils. Each student will learn how to create a personal "jewelry journal" for use as inspiration to design a collection of original jewelry. This class provides the tools and environment for students to identify and develop their own style, create new work, and unleash their creativity.

Gregoré Morin is a Canadian-trained master goldsmith and jewelry designer. He has won 12 AGTA Spectrum awards for jewelry design, 2 MJSA awards, the AJDC New Talent Contest and JA's Mort Abelson New Designer of the Year Award. All work is designed and hand made by Gregoré with the utmost care and attention to detail.

Jennifer Morin is a London-trained master goldsmith and jewelry designer who received High Commendations in her final examinations. Jennifer has an MFA in metals under the tutelage of German-trained Dieter Müller-Stach, as well as a California High School teaching credential. Jennifer is the in-house designer at Silverhorn Jewelers in Santa Barbara. She has won 4 AGTA Spectrum awards and was an AJDC New Talent Contest runner-up. Gregoré and Jennifer Morin are married and share a studio in Santa Barbara, California. Visit gregorejoailliers. com.and jenniferjoailliers. com.

Awaken Your Creativity will be part of the Revere Academy's 2012 Masters Symposium, a world-class series of workshops held from April 7-27 in San Francisco. The Masters Symposium is an opportunity to learn from top-notch jewelry artisans, teaching 2 and 5-day workshops in the areas of their greatest expertise. MORT ABELSON SCHOLARSHIP 2011
A contest open to anyone in the United States and Canada.

Scholarship Background
The contest honors Mort Abelson, who was instrumental in raising the awareness of jewelry design and promoting jewelry designers in the U.S. As President of Jewelers of America from 1975-1977, and then as director until 1995, Mort was responsible for overseeing the massive JA International Trade Show in New York. In order to spice up what was devolving into an ocean of look alike commercial jewelry, Mort had the brilliant idea to bring in a new group of exciting young designers each year. Under the banner, New Designer Gallery, Mort introduced hundreds of talented newcomers over the next three decades. Many launched their careers in the New Designer Gallery and have continued to make their marks as leaders in the field; David Yurman, Esther Gallant, Whitney Boin, Diana Vincent, Steven Kretchmer, Eddie Sakamoto, Tom Kruskal, Penny Preville, Alex Sepkus, Susan Sadler and many more. Among the list is Alan Revere, who is also one of the country’s preeminent jewelry educators, teaching at the school he founded in 1979. As a designer and also a leader in jewelry training, with a long affiliation with Jewelers of America, Revere’s Academy was selected as the scholarship site.

Contest Prize
The contest winner will receive an all-expenses-paid scholarship from anywhere in the US to San Francisco (air, lodging, tuition and fees) for a master class of their choice during the Academy’s annual International Masters Symposium in April 2011. For three weeks during the Masters Symposium, prominent jewelry artists, designers, craftsman and experts converge on San Francisco to teach professional skills and techniques in the area of their greatest expertise. The masters lined up are: James Carter, John Cogswell, Naohiro Yamada, Michael Good, Kent Raible, Kate Wolf, Jack da Silva, Suzanne Pugh, and Alan Revere.

To see more about the Masters Symposium classes available, go to Revere Academy's website.

JURORS
A jury composed of Alan Revere and Cindy Edelstein will select the winner.

ENTRY DEADLINE
November 1, 2010 11:59pm (MST)

Eligibility
The contest is open to anyone in the United States and Canada. Jurors will be looking for an individual whose work exemplifies original, innovative, high quality jewelry design. Submit 5 images of jewelry and 2 short essays of 100 words or less.

Acceptance
Applicants will be notified via email by November 16, 2010.

Special Thanks
This unique scholarship was funded by designers, for designers. At a gathering in 2007 to celebrate the thirtieth anniversary of the New Designer Gallery, an auction was held to raise funds to honor Mort. Over 50 past participants of the New Designer Gallery and other jewelry artists donated a piece of their work to be auctioned, with the proceeds used for the scholarship. The artists/donors all wanted to acknowledge and thank Mort for his support in a way that perpetuates his energy and insight and helps up-and-coming jewelry designers. By paying back with their own creations, these generous artists are completing the circle and are paving the way for the next generation of jewelry designers. Click here to see a list of donors.
