Style Expert Michael O'Connor Talks #OscarJewelry Trends

ACADEMY AWARDS JEWELRY TREND PREDICTIONS
FROM LEADING STYLE EXPERT

Michael O’Connor Hosts Jewelry Style Event for Show Nominees and Presenters

This week Michael O’Connor, celebrity stylist and television personality, will host StyleLab’s jewelry event for Academy Award nominees, presenters and stylists at a private venue in Los Angeles. Every season, O’Connor curates a selection of one-of-a-kind jewelry pieces from world-renowned designers for celebrities to borrow for the red carpetFrom bold colored gemstone earrings to necklaces made with Argyle diamonds from Australia, O’Connor will accessorize Hollywood’s leading stars with the most exquisite, highest quality jewelry.

O’Connor forecasts that celebrities will focus their accessory choices on one large piece of jewelry that adds eye-impact and emphasis without overwhelming their gown. As awards show season peaks with the Oscars, O’Connor offers the following trend predictions:

Longer Linear Earrings are Back
Longer linear diamond earrings remain popular on the red carpet, since they work with every gown. However, designers are playing with larger geometric pave diamond-studded shapes to make their earrings stand out. Kallati designed “Ripple Tear Drop” earrings that feature 4-carats of pave set brilliant white diamonds, priced at $25,000. These earrings would look gorgeous on Jennifer Lawrence, given her pixie haircut. Mastoloni is introducing their “Swirl” earrings, with Tahitian pearls and 3.2-carats of brilliant cut white diamonds, priced at  $9,800. The swirl pattern on the ear lobe, followed by a linear pearl drop, provides the perfect amount of edginess for Cate Blanchett.

Return of the Statement Necklace
The necklace is making a comeback in a major way! The American Gem Trade Association is showcasing a one-of-a-kind necklace. Designed by Richard Berberian of Elyse Fine Jewelers, this show-stopping piece is composed of fancy multi-color sapphires, white sapphires, and round brilliant diamonds, totaling a whopping 57-carats. This stunning design is an ideal luxury accessory for Anne Hathaway. For the Fashion of Diamonds collection, Chinese designer Fei Liu created a nature-inspired necklace, rooted in the Chinese tradition that flowers embody our dreams and aspirations. Using 2,151 small sparkling diamonds from the Argyle diamond mine in Australia, the draped hyacinth necklace was brought to life by Y&M Jewelry. This necklace is priced at $85,456 and would look stunning on the statuesque Lupita Nyong’o.

Bold Colorful Gems
Mirroring fashion runways, an increasing number of celebrities are wearing colorful gowns, so they also are opting for jewelry with bright gemstones, especially for color contrast. Takat designed a pair of drop earrings with over 22.78 carats of tanzanite and diamonds, priced at $36,521. The contrast would look spectacularly striking on redhead Amy Adams. Farah Khan will debut a bracelet with over 77-carats of emeralds, ruby and diamonds, priced at $50,751. Sandra Bullock doesn’t shy away from color, so this bracelet would be the perfect accessory!
Classics Reinterpreted
Since the hottest fashion designers are giving us a retro look back at the previous century, jewelry, designers are reinterpreting the classic “must-haves” of past decades. The Leo Diamond Collection crafted a pair of diamond deep drop earrings with their “visibly brighter” diamonds that gradually increase in size and importance as they stretch to the shoulder. Priced at $350,000, this custom creation belongs on a classic beauty like Jennifer Garner. Uneek re-mastered the diamond tennis bracelet for the Oscars, by designing a 24-carat total weight bracelet with 3 rows of asscher and round diamonds, priced at $218,182. The mix of cuts gives amazing sparkle, so I envision this bracelet on Reese Witherspoon. For celebrities who are seeking a hefty cuff, they can count on the bracelet by Interjewel USA for the Diamonds With A StoryTM   collection. Priced at $19,999, this bold 28.2-carat bracelet features white and SilvermistTM diamonds from the Argyle Diamond Mine in Australia. Angelina Jolie would rock this bracelet! The entire Diamonds With A StoryTM  collection contains rare, natural color diamonds sustainably and ethically sourced from the Argyle Diamond Mine.

OMG - Emmy Time...Already? Michael O'Connor Gives Us the Trends

EMMY AWARDS JEWELRY TREND PREDICTIONS
FROM LEADING STYLE EXPERT

Michael O’Connor Hosts Jewelry Style Event for Show Nominees and Presenters

This week Michael O’Connor, celebrity stylist and television personality, will host StyleLab’s styling event for Emmy Award nominees, presenters and stylists at a private venue in Los Angeles. Every season O’Connor curates a selection of one-of-a-kind jewelry pieces from world-renowned designers for celebrities to borrow for the red carpet.

From colored gemstone earrings to exotic cuffs, O’Connor will accessorize Hollywood’s leading stars with the most exquisite, highest quality jewelry.

This season O’Connor sees an overall fascination with more embellished styles featuring colored diamonds and precious gemstones – both modern and vintage designs. As the biggest
television award show of the season quickly approaches, O’Connor offers the following trend predictions.

We’re seeing a variety of exotic gemstone colors and rare material mixes to create statement pieces. Jewelry designer Abellan New York is showcasing a ring with rubellite, turquoise, blue sapphires, pearls and diamonds.

Designer Joan Park is featuring earrings with aquamarine, and green and pink tourmaline, priced at $3,000. This piece is part of The Diamonds With A Story™ Collection, which includes a grouping of designers who have expressed their design stories working with the variety of beautiful and natural shades from the Argyle diamond mine in Australia. The Collections are based across four viewpoints shared by consumers on what they want most in diamond jewelry; origin, sustainability, color and lifestyle.

Another piece in The Diamonds With A Story™ Collection is from Kara Ross. She mixes parts of broken sidewalk concrete with diamonds to create a statement ring, priced at $2,130. The fashionable Heidi Klum would be a perfect fit for this ring!
Taking the concept of exotic palettes a step further, you will notice jewelry that is reminiscent of ancient times and far away lands. A necklace from Gems by Gerald featuring Karla B. Proud for the American Gem Trade Association (AGTA) is comprised of a 12-carat bi-color Oregon Sunstone and an imperial jasper cabochon, on a multi-strand chain, priced at $7,500.
Designers are also creating luxurious pieces with a sleek modern twist. The 114.94 carat
white topaz cuff from Bellarri, priced at $21,780, takes the classic line-bracelet style to a
whole new level.

Canadian designer Mark Lash is showcasing drop earrings, priced at $5,580, that focus your attention on the lustrous 82.61 carats of sapphires and diamonds. The “Magnolia Flower” 10-carat diamond necklace from A. Jaffe, priced at $108,018, weaves floral design in a totally fresh way. Kerry Washington would turn heads in this necklace.
Hollywood Glamour will always remain a staple on the red carpet. Stackable cuffs with diamonds by Gabriel & Co., priced from $875, are ideal for celebrities who want to look polished without feeling “overdone”.

Michael showing off the stunning Takat Emerald
Celebrities are also obsessing over vintage pieces, including hair combs/pins once owned by Marilyn Monroe that are now part of the Jewelry By Gail collection, priced at $48,000. And, designer Takat is re-inventing the meaning of Hollywood glamour with an 108-carat emerald cut Columbian emerald necklace, featuring 72-carats of diamonds, priced at $3 million. The statuesque Sofia Vergara was born to wear these vintage types of designs.

“The Jazz Age” is swinging again! Designers are creating pieces that bring us back to the  1920’s. Mastoloni introduced a signature black and white “Ice” necklace with cultured pearls and 30-carats of black and white diamonds, featuring a tassel of cultured pearls and white diamonds, priced at $10,500. AGTA designer Baggins shows a cocktail ring with natural color Akoya cultured pearls and diamonds, priced at $30,000. Michelle Dockery would evoke modern Gatsby glamour wearing these pearls.

The “Mad Men” Appeal -
Don’t forget about men on the red carpet, as they’re quickly realizing that watches and jewelrymake an important statement. Seah Watches & Jewelry launched "The Astronomer" timepiece, the only watch in the world that comes with the Greek Zodiac signs replacing the hours. It’s priced at $600. The Perrelet “Double Peripheral Rotor” watch features a black dial and luminous hour-markers, on a black alligator strap with white stitching, priced at $8,550.  We can already envision Jon Hamm and Aaron Paul wearing these styles.

Los Angeles, CA (January 7, 2013) –This week Michael O’Connor, leading style expert and host of MovieStyle with Michael O’Connor on Reelz Channel, will host StyleLab’s jewelry event for Golden Globe Award nominees, presenters and stylists at a private venue in Los Angeles. O’Connor has curated a selection of one-of-a-kind jewelry pieces from world-renowned designers for celebrities to borrow for the red carpetFrom ornate cuff bracelets to black diamond cufflinks, O’Connor will accessorize Hollywood’s leading stars with the most exquisite, highest quality jewelry.

O’Connor sees an overall fascination with colored gemstones and intricate designs this year – both modern and vintage styles. As the Golden Globe Awards quickly approach, O’Connor offers the following trend predictions:

Emerald Green
It’s the Pantone Color of the Year and gorgeous on red heads like Amy Adams – so expect to see a lot of emerald green on the red carpet. A breathtaking pair of tassel earrings from Abellan New York includes over 71 carats of emeralds that will make everyone green with envy. Beverly Hills designer Dena Kemp will unveil a one-of-a-kind emerald cocktail ring surrounded by diamonds. Trendsetting jewelry brand Just Jules will highlight a pair of rose-cut diamond and emerald slice chandelier earrings that will make a major statement. We will also see emeralds featured in a captivating necklace by Takat. This $145,000 design includes over 85 carats of Zambian emeralds in pear and oval cabochon cuts, and more than 15 carats of diamonds, all set in platinum and 18k yellow gold.

Drop Earrings and Vintage Pendants
While chandelier earrings are a classic, the latest styles are drops in all shapes and sizes. Bellarri’s linear drop earrings include over 26 carats of amethyst and diamonds. Jewelry By Gail’s “Staircase to Royalty” linear drop earrings also feature amethyst, however hers include a long vine-swirl French wire design, making them perfect for the lovely French actress Marion Cotillard. American Gem Trade Association (AGTA) designer Campbellian’s Bella Campbell designed a pair of round drop earrings that feature royal blue moonstones surrounded by diamonds. Since all of these baubles will draw attention to the jawbone, they will look perfect with plum colored lips! Be on the lookout for the return of pendant necklaces. Trendsetting stars like Sienna Miller or Zooey Deschanel will fall in love with AGTA’s My Blue Heaven designer Cara Lichtenstein’s black enamel pendant brooch set in platinum, featuring a 41 carat black opal accented with white diamonds…very vintage-inspired.

Cuff Bracelets
Whether they are worn as the sole piece of jewelry or stacked on both arms, cuffs remain in vogue on the red carpet. We’ll see more intricate metalwork like Canadian designer Mark Lash’s flexible mesh bangle bracelet with a diamond clasp, set in yellow gold. Silver Promotion Service (SPS) designer Slane will feature a sterling silver cuff bracelet with a sequence of ribbed and smooth rows along a diamond studded hinged closure. SPS designer Thistle & Bee’s thick sterling silver cuff looks like a stunning piece of modern art.

Men’s Jewelry
Hollywood’s most stylish men including Hugh Jackman, Bradley Cooper and Leonardo DiCaprio understand the importance of modern men’s jewelry. Traditional square cufflinks and chains are taking a backseat to styles with interesting patterns and materials. Designer Edward Mirell launched a cufflink and bracelet collection featuring black diamonds, textured leather, and cable.

Nadia Neuman Winner Featured in StyleLab's Red Carpet Jewelry Suite!

NADIA REIGNS ON THE 2012 ACADEMY AWARDS RED CARPET
Australian Jewellery Designer wins Global Design Competition!

Australian jewellery designer Nadia Neuman has been awarded one of the most prestigious
international jewellery awards with her design ‘Tyger Tyger’ to be launched at a suite as part of the 2012 Academy Awards in February.

Neuman won the Master Jewellery award in the Sustainability category as part of Rio Tinto’s Global Design Competition. The competition had a record number of entries from the US, Canada, Australia, India, China and Hong Kong across four categories of jewellery design and was judged by an elite panel from the fashion and jewellery industries. Her piece along with the other winning entrants will be part of Stylelab, a Red Carpet Celebrity Suite hosted by US jewellery expert Michael O’Connor and attended by some of the biggest names in Hollywood plus their stylists in the lead up to the Oscars on Sunday 26 February.

Neuman’s piece is a hand fan that melds together functionality and luxury all from a sustainable perspective. The fan features 18ct yellow gold panels of tiger print, surrounded by white diamonds set in 18ct white gold frames displaying black, iridescent feathers with diamonds set along each quill.

In addition to using 100% sustainable materials in the design, the Tiger motif represents nature as an endangered creature and reminds its user of the need to care for the earth. The fan can also be worn as a necklace.

Submitted to “Sustainable Jewellery” category, is a breathtaking and glamorous ladies fan,
inspired by the themes of beauty and wild-spirit in nature, and glamour, mystery and adornment in culture.
“TYGER TYGER BURNING BRIGHT, IN THE FORESTS OF THE NIGHT”  William Blake: 1757-1827, “The Tyger”.
Neuman said, “It is a great honour to be recognised in this competition among so many other well known international jewellery designers. And to be given this special introduction to some of the worlds’ most glamorous celebrities is a once in a lifetime opportunity for an Australian designer!”

Nadia is no stranger to the limelight having been recognised with a host of Australian design awards already including the Harper’s BAZAAR Diamond Guild Australia Jewellery Awards and the Australian Jewellery Awards held by the Jewellers Association of Australia.

About Tyger, Tyger - from the Designer:
"I have been inspired by the design brief, to create a unique piece of jewellery using entirely sustainable materials which is both supremely glamorous, yet functional. As a young(ish) woman and soon to be mother, ethical issues of sustainability, including recycling and renewable resources are of great importance to me. I feel we all have a duty towards future generations, to ensure we leave them the world in better shape than we found it – the world should be better, not worse, for us having been in it. We should aim that our legacy is always one of improvement rather than simply depletion and this should be true in all fields of human endeavour, not just science and medicine.
It is critically important as the world’s population will continue to increase that all aspects of production focus on the notion of “sustainability”. From the period known as “the enlightenment”(approx.1650-1750), through to the industrial revolution which followed, the majority of human activity has proceeded as if all resources were infinite, and their depletion and pollution could go on forever. We now know that is not the case and we must implement the notion of sustainability wherever possible. It is paramount to the health of the planet and it our responsibility to protect and preserve whatever we can – for ourselves and our descendants.
This being the case, I have taken particular delight in trying to show that we can fulfil the moral obligation of “sustainability”, without sacrificing one little bit of creativity, glamour, desireability, luxury and mystique. I feel this has all been achieved in this design called “Tyger, Tyger”, as well as the functionality of a working, foldable, ladies fan. The exotic Tiger motif, encapsulates so many things which are perfect for such an item: The Tiger represents nature and an endangered creature. In this sense, it stands for the world we have inherited, used and neglected and need to care for – it and its habitat, needs to be protected and “sustained”. In the aesthetic sense, the tiger represents beauty and feminity, strength and independence and of course, a wild and untamed spirit – all things which are desireable in the design of a bold and striking piece of jewellery."
The sustainability jewellery movement is fast growing in popularity as consumers become more aware of the power of their purchase. According to a recent trend report titled Green Marketing and the Luxury Consumer, the consumers with the big bucks, particularly women, are increasingly looking to a company’s environmental practice before a purchase.

Neuman says, “Since the movie Blood Diamond we have seen a steady increase in clients wanting ethically sourced materials and of course, to ensure that the diamonds are conflict free. The typical ‘green’ jewellery consumer is no longer a fashion-challenged hippie but more likely an affluent professional woman who wants to make her purchase count.”

Mondial is a family run business with over 100 years of collective experience. Founded by Nadia’s parents Fred and Maria Neuman in the 70’s, Mondial are recognised worldwide as pink and coloured diamond specialists selling some of the world’s most rare and luxury pieces from their Strand Arcade and Queen Victoria Building boutiques.

Michael O'Connor on the Royal Bride's Jewelry

Jewelry Expert Michael O'Connor Comments on Kate Middleton's Wedding Jewelry:
“The unique blend of modern, vintage and heirloom pieces of platinum jewelry from both her family and from William's family chosen by Kate illustrate the couple's desire to marry today's elements with the durability and traditions of yesterday.

The choice of the platinum and diamond Halo tiara by Cartier, originally designed for the Queen Mother and then handed down to the Queen (then Princess Elizabeth) combined with newer pieces such as the platinum and diamond pear shaped drop earrings designed by Robinson Pelham (a present from Kate's parents), and the iconic sapphire and diamond engagement ring, once owned by Princess Diana, illustrate the bond of family and the lifetime legacy that quality platinum jewelry provides. Kate’s jewelry style truly exemplifies that of a modern yet sophisticated royal bride.”

Jewelry Expert Michael O'Connor Gives Royal Wedding Forecast

Michael in a Jewelry Suite before the Golden Globes
Photo via: The Recessionista

With all eyes watching the Royal Couple...we turned to Celebrity Stylist and Jewelry Expert Michael O'Connor for a professional's glimpse into Kate and the choices that will go down in history.

In an exclusive quote to The Daily Jewel, O'Connor says...
“Kate loves fashion and has a tailored and sophisticated style. She won’t want to be seen as the “Fairy Tale Princess Bride”. I think her jewelry choices will be much more youthful and chic, but with some dramatic elements. She will most likely choose pieces set in platinum since it maximizes the brilliance of diamonds and colored gemstones, which is important as the world watches while she walks down that long aisle.”
