GIA Notifies Trade of Potential Undisclosed Diamond Treatment

from a press release

GIA Notifies Trade of Potential Undisclosed Diamond Treatment

CARLSBAD – May 12, 2015 – Approximately 500 colorless to near-colorless diamonds submitted primarily to GIA’s grading laboratory in Ramat Gan, Israel, were potentially subjected to an undisclosed temporary treatment.

GIA believes that the treatment temporarily masks the body color of the diamond, resulting in a color grade that can be up to three grades higher than its actual grade.

The Institute has terminated client agreements with the companies that submitted the diamonds in question and has notified appropriate trade bodies.

The report numbers of the potentially treated stones are posted on the GIA's website  at:  (http://www.gia.edu/gem-lab/laboratory-alert-may-2015).

Anyone who has purchased or has access to any of these diamonds is asked to submit them to any GIA lab for a no-cost, expedited review.

Next Up The Mixed Metal Mastery of Sara Graham

Her natural surroundings are a source of constant inspiration for designer
Sarah Graham. Sarah's prolific collection of jewelry is organic, textural and subtly feminine, yet substantial. The above pendant is from her new Oak Leaf collection and was inspired by Sarah's childhood home in Northern California, where she had a beautiful old oak tree in her front yard. The artist has fond memories of the leaves, and in particular the way they looked on the pavement and wrapped around stones after a heavy rain. Crafted in 18 karat yellow gold and oxidized silver, this piece is accented with white faceted diamonds.

Lito Reveals The History and Lore of the Mythical Scarab

Greek designer Lito Karakostanoglu creates pieces with a seductive, modern allure, inspired by travels and couture fashion. Her extensive background in sculpture and technical drawing are evident in each of her avant-guard creations, which are reputed for being instant collectables. The above Scarab brooch is made from a Malaysian Enoplotrupes Sharpi beetle, embellished with diamonds and set in 18 karat rose gold. The entire Scarabees De Beaute collection revolves around the mythical properties of the sacred scarab and its innate beauty.

Villa 212

The Sensual Edge of Nikos Koulis

Greek-based designer Nikos Koulis brings his sharp outlook and authentic passion for jewelry to every piece he creates in his prolific collection. With a long-standing reputation for driving trends, Nikos' jewelry contains both a sensuality and an edginess that is immediately recognizable. The above pendant is comprised of blue, black and white diamonds set in black rhodium. While crafted in metal and stones, the spaces left open in the piece give it an appearance of movement and fluidity.

Then Mizuki Shows Us The Purity, Vitality and Fluidity That Is Her Namesake

Born in Tokyo, Japan, designer Mizuki moved to New York when she was 10 years old. Her jewelry represents the artist's own sophisticated style combined with a feminine yet bold edginess, and it is the embodiment of the collision of the two cultures she claims as her own. Named by her grandmother to represent purity, vitality and fluidity in life, Mizuki not only embraces these qualities in her personal character, but they are the main components in her collection. The aboveSquare Rings are crafted in 18 karat yellow gold featuring diamonds, and are perfect either worn alone or stacked for a bolder look.

CSARITE® Contributed to Gem-A’s

Educational Programs

The Gemmological Association of Great Britain (Gem-A) received a generous contribution of CSARITE® faceted and rough gemstones for study in their prestigious educational programs.
Milenyum Mining, Ltd. made the donation to expand student’s knowledge of the natural, single source gem, actively mined at only one global source deep in the Anatolia Mountains of Turkey. The donation consists of faceted gems, rough specimens and a selection of crystals to be used for RI testing.

“Europe and the UK are rapidly growing markets for CSARITE(R),” explained Murat Akgun, president of Milenyum Mining Limited. “A contribution of CSARITE® gems of this magnitude enables Gem-A to share knowledge of this gem with their students and for those students to gain hands-on knowledge of this beautiful gem.”

Always natural and never enhanced, the lovely CSARITE® exhibits the rare gemological phenomenon of ‘color change’, exhibiting different colors under varying sources of light. Only about 40 – 50% of rough CSARITE® material is suitable for faceting, and of that amount, 98% is lost in the cutting process.

MML is the world’s only source supply of CSARITE®, a natural, unenhanced color-change gemstone. Responsible for cutting and marketing of this phenomenal gemstone, MML’s mission is to introduce gem and jewelry connoisseurs around the globe to CSARITE®’s unique beauty and rarity. MML is a member of The International Colored Gemstone Association and Gemmological Association of Great Britain. Visit www.csarite.com for a list
of authorized retailers and distributors.

Gem-A is committed to promoting the study of gemology through education and membership. Visit http://www.gem-a.com/ to learn more.

Gems & Gemology Spring 2015 Explores a World of Colored Gems

from a press release

Gems & Gemology Explores a World of Colored Gems
Spring 2015 issue reviews Chinese jewelry designers, colored diamond spectra and more

CARLSBAD, Calif. – May 1, 2015 – The first Gems & Gemology (G&G) issue of 2015 takes a journey around the world to review Vietnamese blue spinel, Moroccan amethyst, Mozambique ruby, contemporary Chinese jewelry designs and the Tucson gem shows. The Spring 2015 issue of G&G, GIA’s quarterly professional journal, is now available in print, and online with exclusive video content.

G&G’s cover story is “Blue Spinel from the Luc Yen District of Vietnam” by French researcher Boris Chauviré and his coauthors. The article offers geological context and a gemological characterization of the vivid blue spinel found in Luc Yen, northern Vietnam, which owes its remarkable color to traces of cobalt.

Next is “The Chinese Soul in Contemporary Jewelry Design.” GIA’s Andrew Lucas, Merilee Chapin, Moqing Lin and Xiaodan Jia survey the notable progress China’s jewelry designers have made over the last decade. Influenced by their cultural roots and driven by the rapidly growing domestic consumer market, the artistic prowess of Chinese designers is increasingly evident on the global stage.

Another feature by a joint Moroccan-Italian team headed by Fabrizio Troilo provides an introduction to amethysts from Boudi, Morocco. The study outlines the geology, mining, and the internal and external features of this attractive material. The fourth and final peer-reviewed article, by GIA researchers Dr. James Shigley and Dr. Mike Breeding, reviews colored diamond spectra, including an exclusive and informative foldout chart. In a field report, GIA authors Merilee Chapin, Vincent Pardieu and Andrew Lucas report on the geology and mining practices at Mozambique’s Montepuez ruby deposit, currently the world’s most important commercial source of ruby.

The issue also contains in-depth coverage of the February 2015 Tucson Gem and Mineral shows, as well as reports on the recent Gemstone Industry & Laboratory Conference (GILC) and the GIA-sponsored International Diamond School for natural diamond researchers held late January in Brixen, Italy. Additional details about G&G, full articles, more in-depth coverage, hundreds of additional photos, and exclusive video footage are available on GIA’s website at http://www.gia.edu/gia-news-research.
