On December 10, after a banner year in which new heights were achieved for colored and colorless diamonds, Christie’s New York will conclude the winter auction season with a spectacular 52.58-­‐carat D-­‐color Internally Flawless Golconda diamond that possess a superior luminance, luster and distinct brilliance. The sacred diamond mines of Golconda yield diamonds of a specific type, color, and the highest degree of transparency. 

Exhibiting a superior polish and octagonal cutting style, a diamond this rare marks an unprecedented opportunity for collectors of the world’s finest gemstones. A SUPERB COLLECTION OF DIAMOND JEWELRY 

Property of an Elegant Lady 

Four Magnificent Jewels from an Exceptional Private Collector, all from LEVIEV, one of the world’s most exclusive diamond jewelry brands, offers a star lot in a cushion-­‐cut D-­‐ color internally flawless diamond ring of 26.72 carats (pictured below, left). The stone is mounted in platinum, flanked on either side by a shield-­‐shaped diamond. This magnificent ring is estimated at $4,000,000 – 6,000,000. A diamond pendant necklace suspending a pear-­‐haped D-­‐color VVS1 diamond of 22.12 carats to the pear-­‐shaped and oval-­‐cut necklace of 38.76 carats, pictured left, is estimated at $2,500,000 – 3,500,000, along with a diamond bracelet set with eighty-­‐eight rectangular diamonds weighing a total of 90.81 carats (pictured below, right; estimate: $500,000 – 700,000). A pair of pear-­‐shaped D-­‐color diamond ear pendants of 10.31 and 9.94 carats (pictured below, center; estimate: $2,000,000 – 3,000,000) round off the collection which was acquired and completed with great taste over the course of two years.

PROPERTY FROM THE MARION RUMSEY CARTIER COLLECTION 

AT SAINT LOUIS UNIVERSITY

Marion Rumsey Cartier was born in New York on April 14, 1911. Her father, Pierre Cartier, was one of the three legendary Cartier brothers. Her mother, Elma Rumsey, was the daughter of Moses Rumsey, a prominent industrialist from Saint Louis. Madame Cartier’s Saint Louis heritage was of such importance to her that it ultimately formed her connection with Saint Louis University. Her legacy to the University included photographs, letters, and paintings. In 1932, upon meeting Father J. Barry McGannon S.J., then vice president and later Chancellor of Saint Louis University, Madame Cartier found a sanctuary at the University where her memories and extraordinary life could be preserved. Her remarkable collection of manuscripts is maintained at the University and the proceeds of the sale will in part act as an endowment for their preservation as well as other valuable projects. Marion Cartier died peacefully on March 20, 1994 in Geneva at the age of 83. Highlights include:

TUTTI FRUTTI 

Few designs have captured the imagination and enthusiam of connoisseurs and collectors as Cartier’s Tutti Frutti creations. These pieces are directly inspired by the intricate Mughal carving and craftsmanship found throughout the decorative arts of India from the 16th century onwards. The introduction of Indian influences and gemstones into jewels was one of Cartier’s greatest innovations in the Art Deco period. Seen in the example below on offer on December 10, the unique incorporation of jadeite cabochons in the Tutti Frutti series. As Lot 492 in the evening session of Magnificent Jewels, devotees of the Art Deco period will have a great opportunity to acquire one of Cartier’s most sought-­‐after signature creations.

This stunning Padparascha Sapphire was definitely my favorite piece in the auction.

The sell through wasn’t as good for this auction as other recent events – I was surprised to see more than one David Webb piece that didn’t sell!  …and the photo below is just a small example of the colored diamond pieces that didn't sell!!!  note the SugarLoaf Ruby!!!!

New York - An exceedingly rare red diamond, a stunning three-stone emerald ring, and a 50-carat D color diamond ring by the celebrated jeweler Graff are among the star lots of Christie’s upcoming Magnificent Jewels sale on Monday, December 10.  With over 300 lots, this blockbuster sale offers the perfect solution to the age-old question of what to buy a loved one for the holidays.  Large colored and colorless diamonds, rare gemstones, natural pearls and exquisite signed jewels from the Art Nouveau and Art Deco periods will be featured in the day-long auction at Christie’s in Rockefeller Center, with estimates ranging from $500 up to several million dollars. The total sale, which is accessible for bidding in person, on the phone, online, or by absentee bid, is expected to realize in excess of $25 million.

“Since the start of 2012, this has proven to be a vibrant year of strong prices for top-quality diamonds, colored gemstones, natural pearls, and signed jewels at auction. Per-carat prices for exceptional diamonds have continued to climb this auction season, spurred by collector demand for investment-quality gems.  At Christie’s recent jewelry auction in Geneva, the historic 76.02 carat, D-color Archduke Joseph Diamond fetched US$21.5 million, setting a new world auction record for a colourless diamond. It also set a new record per-carat price for a colorless diamond at $282,545 per carat, surpassing the landmark $266,000 per carat price achieved for the 33.19 carat, D-color Elizabeth Taylor Diamond, sold at Christie’s New York in December 2011.

In response to the deep appetite among collectors for diamonds of this caliber, Christie’s has assembled a superb selection of top-quality colored and colorless diamonds for this pre-holiday sale, led by a dazzling array of twelve D-color diamonds –  the whitest shade possible. The star of the group is a stunning rectangular-cut, D-color, potentially internally flawless diamond ring of 50.01 carats (pictured at left and page one, center).  Offered for sale from an important private collection, the stone is mounted in a platinum setting designed by the celebrated jeweler Graff, with two baguette-cut diamonds flanking the center stone.  This spectacular ring is estimated at $7,000,000 – 10,000,000.

A RARE REDDISH-ORANGE DIAMOND

For collectors of colored diamonds, perhaps no shade of diamond is as alluring – and elusive – as the rare red diamond. This season, Christie’s is proud to present a 3.15 carat circular-cut fancy reddish orange diamond  – the largest reddish orange diamond ever graded at the Gemological Institute of America (GIA), and the largest ever to be offered at auction.  Exhibiting excellent symmetry and polish, this special stone is estimated at $700,000-$1,200,000 (pictured at right and on page one).

The diamond’s exceptional rarity is a function of both its intense color and large size; highly saturated diamonds in shades of red and orange are considered to be among the rarest of all fancy colored diamonds. The cause of their coloration is a natural phenomenon that is not thoroughly understood, but is believed to occur when minute quantities of nitrogen or hydrogen are present when the diamond’s crystal lattice is forming deep within the earth’s crust.

Very few red diamonds larger than one carat are known to exist. Among the largest is a circular-cut 5.03 fancy dark red diamond that is now in the permanent collection of the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C. The appearance of this rare diamond at auction presents a unique collecting opportunity for gem connoisseurs who appreciate both the aesthetic appeal and serendipitous nature of this true geological wonder.

TOP JEWELS AND HOLIDAY GIFTS

In addition to top colored and colorless diamonds, the Magnificent Jewels sale features an outstanding selection of rare gemstones as well as signed jewels from coveted design firms such as Buccellati, Cartier, David Webb, Tiffany & Co., Van Cleef & Arpels, and Verdura, among others.  Among the star lots is an impressive three-stone Colombian emerald ring mounted with an 8.51 carat cushion-cut center stone and flanked by matching emeralds of 4.04 and 3.94 carats, respectively (estimate: $475,000-550,000; pictured page one, right).

For devotees of fine period jewels, the sale features an impressive group of signed creations from the Art Nouveau, Belle Époque and Art Deco periods, including original designs by Réné Lalique, Cartier, and the late American jeweler Paul Flato, known as the original Hollywood celebrity jeweler.  A spectacular sapphire and diamond bracelet by Paul Flato from circa 1935 graces the cover of the sale catalogue (pictured previous page; estimate: $120,000-180,000). CHRISTIE’S SALE OF IMPORTANT JEWELS ON 12 DECEMBER 2012 COMPRISES 383 LOTS AND OFFERS THE CHANCE TO ACQUIRE EXQUISITE EXAMPLES OF JEWELS BY THE LEADING HOUSES AND DESIGNERS.

Christie’s London sale of Important Jewels on 12 December 2012 comprises 383 lots and offers the chance to acquire exquisite examples of jewels by the leading houses and designers including: Cartier, Van Cleef & Arpels, Boucheron and Bulgari. Spanning four centuries, the sale presents a strong array of rare historic rings, diamonds and pearls, with estimates ranging from £1,000 to £800,000.

Leading the sale are an exquisite mid-19^th century diamond tiara and a diamond and pearl necklace, formerly in the collection of The 1^st Marchioness Conygnham (1769-1861), the last mistress of George IV (1762-1830), 

The necklace (estimate: £50,000 – 70,000) and tiara (estimate: £200,000 - £250,000) reflect the King’s desire that his court should be the most brilliant in Europe. Resplendent in his Field Marshal’s uniform with diamonds blazing from his hat and Garter star, His Majesty the King cut a magnificent and unforgettable figure on every official occasion. While he recognised the prestigious value of jewels, they also appealed to his sense of beauty and his commissions to the leading jewellers are an important aspect of his patronage of the arts.

George IV enjoyed giving jewels to the women in his life and often did so, The 1st Marchioness being especially favoured. Contemporary memoirs of 1829 recounting ‘’the wealth Lady Conygnham must have accumulated by savings and presents must be enormous, the King continues to heap all kinds of presents on her and she lives at his expense.” Until his death in 1830, Lady Conyngham was always at the King’s side, he proudly took her arm at dinner and he encouraged her to wear as many jewels as she liked so that she would be sure to stand out at court events.

NATURAL PEARLS

The demand for high quality natural pearls continues to grow and this sale features a strong selection of natural pearls at a wide range of estimates and in varying forms. Leading highlights include an important natural pearl necklace which is expected to realise between £500,000 & £800,000, a necklace consisting of sixty natural pearls, alternately strung with seed pearls suspending a drop pearl (estimate: £60,000 - 80,000), and  a pair of art deco natural pearl and diamond ear pendants (estimate: £25,000 – 35,000).   

EMERALDS

A particularly strong selection of emeralds will include a dress ring by Bulgari (estimate: £65,000 – 75,000), an emerald and diamond ring by Cartier (estimate: £70,000 – 90,000) and an impressive emerald and diamond tiara mounted by Cartier (estimate: £120,000 – 150,000). This tiara, with its diamond palm motifs, comes with a detachable chain for it to be worn as a necklace; such convertible tiaras continue to be very popular, maximizing usability for the owner.   

CARTIER

Since it was founded in 1847, Cartier has been a symbol of French Haute Joaillerie. Incomparable and timeless designs, together with gemstones of the highest quality and exceptional craftsmanship ensure that Cartier jewels remain some of the most sought-after amongst International collectors. Always a highlight of the London sale, the regular Cartier section features over 40 lots, from jewels and cufflinks to watches, clocks and accessories.  Jewellery highlights include an early 20^th century diamond aeroplane brooch (estimate: £8,000 – 10,000).
